On July 9th, the House Appropriations Committee voted on party lines to advance the Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act. The bill directly threatens the critically important landscape and wildlife habitat in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) and surrounding regions by overturning the withdrawal of over 225,000 acres of public land from mineral leasing in the Rainy River Watershed of Northeast Minnesota, as well as reissuing two hard-rock mining leases to Twin Metals in the Superior National Forest, directly upstream of our nation’s most visited Wilderness Area.
