Staying The Course In 2025 & Beyond
December 16, 2024 1:34 pmThanks to our corporate partners and a generous SFBW board member, all tax-deductible donations up to $20,000 will be doubled through the end of the year.
Since its inception, Sportsmen for the Boundary Waters has worked tirelessly to protect the outdoor opportunities we have all come to cherish in Minnesota’s Arrowhead region through three presidential administrations.
We’ve seen everything from permanent protection legislation to mining lease reinstatements, regulation changes and interpretations, positive stewardship initiatives and negligence, and every manner of opinion and political movement.
The truth is that the Boundary Waters Canoe Area isn’t going anywhere, and neither are we, despite the seemingly unpredictable and tumultuous world around us. The condition of our cherished Wilderness, however, is something that requires diligence.
In 2024, Sportsmen for the Boundary Waters decided to take on the mission of not only defending this great region but also getting on offense and moving the ball forward. This year, we pushed our mission on multiple fronts: advocacy, stewardship and habitat restoration, community engagement, and broadcasting the importance of our work to a broader audience.
If you’re engaged in the Boundary Waters community, you’ve probably already heard a number of different cases for why the next four years will be disastrous to the Boundary Waters, but here’s the truth…
Yes, President-Elect Donald Trump has said he will undo the mining moratorium. Yes, the United States House of Representatives and the Senate both have Republican majorities. And yes, we are expecting legislation to help push the Twin Metals project forward almost immediately.
Despite what we’re expecting on the political front in the coming years, the rest of our work isn’t going anywhere. Our adopted Wildlife Management Area will still need upkeep, the Forest Service and MN DNR will still need input on Boundary Waters issues, we will still need to expand our list of engaged partners, and events will still need to be organized. No administration will change that.
As we close out 2024, please consider financially supporting Sportsmen for the Boundary Waters. In past years, we have generally avoided outright asking for money because of “scary” changes to our political landscape, but we need your help, plain and simple, to maintain our nonpartisan presence in Washington and the Minnesota Capitol without sacrificing the rest of our work. We need money to knock on doors in the halls of Congress, hire and contract the right people, and take on projects as they arise.
The fight will continue no matter what because that’s what we love to do. We are the Boundary Waters organization with connections on both sides of the aisle, and our work will never be more critical. Still, your support will drive home the importance of protecting the Boundary Waters, not just with our elected officials but with the entire country. 2025 can be a year of strengthening for Sportsmen for the Boundary Waters, but rest assured, we will need your help.
Thanks to you – we aren’t going anywhere,
The SFBW Staff & Board
