Release: DNR announces state level EIS for Twin Metals

ELY, MN  – Sportsmen for the Boundary Waters Executive Director Lukas Leaf issued the following comment regarding the Minnesota DNR’s announcement that it will conduct a state-level Environmental Impact Statement of the proposed Twin Metals mine, separate from the federal government’s review.

“We support all science-based review of this project, but the science is clear: Sulfide-ore copper mining in the watershed of the Boundary Waters is not worth the risk. This type of mining poses an unacceptable risk to fish, wildlife, and the water quality downstream of the proposed project in America’s most-visited wilderness area.

“Hunters and anglers will continue to fight in Congress, at the state level, and throughout each environmental review of this mine plan to ensure the Boundary Waters are permanently protected for future generations.”
