Twin Metals Mine Plan Of Operation Submitted Today

ELY, MN – Today Twin Metals submitted a mine plan of operations to state and federal agencies to begin permitting a sulfide-ore copper mine upstream of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Sportsmen for the Boundary Waters’ Lukas Leaf issued the following statement:

“The stark reality is Twin Metals’ mine plan, submitted today, will pollute the Boundary Waters. So let’s be clear – Entering into this process as a state will not change what we know about the type of mine they have proposed,” said Lukas Leaf, executive director of Sportsmen for the Boundary Waters. “The buck stops with Gov. Walz. He can and should protect the Boundary Waters by halting any of his department’s actions to permit the proposed Twin Metals project.”

Federal agencies canceled an environmental review of the proposed Twin Metals project in September, 2018. Federal mineral leases were granted to Twin Metals without proper environmental review or public input after the U.S. Forest Service found, “unacceptable the inherent potential risk that development of a regionally-untested copper-nickel sulfide ore mine within the same watershed as the BWCAW might cause serious and irreplaceable harm to this unique, iconic and irreplaceable wilderness area.

Minnesota DNR has announced its own Environmental Impact Statement of the proposed project.

When asked if their project will pollute the Boundary Waters, Twin Metals’ representatives say “It’s difficult to answer that question now.” and “That’s not a fair question.
